To update the full self-driving program, Tesla decides to recall 362,000 American cars

Electric car company Tesla announced that it will recall 362,000 US vehicles to fix defects and update the beta software for full self-driving after US regulators indicated on Thursday that the driver assistance system did not adequately comply with traffic safety laws and could cause accidents.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the Tesla program allows the car to “exceed the specified maximum speed or pass intersections in an illegal or unpredictable way, which increases the risk of an accident.”

Tesla will issue a remote software update for free, and the company said it was not aware of any injuries or deaths that could be linked to the recall.

The recalls include the 2016-2023 Model S, the 2017-2023 Model X, and the 2020-2023 Model 3 and Y, which are equipped with fully autonomous driving beta software.

Tesla shares fell 3.6 percent to $206.62 Thursday afternoon, and were among the most heavily traded shares on US stock exchanges.

For years, the American company has been criticized by a number of officials who consider the program a threat to public safety.
