So, who are the shareholders or owners of coal issuers who ‘arrived at the money’?
Below this CNBC Indonesia Research Team summarizes a number of big names who have been around in the coal world for a long time. The majority are names that ‘look’ in the Forbes list of the 50 richest people in Indonesia in 2021.
1. Boy Thohir (Adaro Energy Indonesia)
Garibaldi ‘Boy’ Thohir, together with TP Rachmat and Edwin Soeryadjaya founded the giant listed company PT Adaro Energy Tbk (ADRO), which when it first went public on the stock exchange in 2008 managed to secure the largest IPO funding in history – a record that was recently broken by the issuer. e-commerce PT Bukalapak.com Tbk (BUKA).
Adaro’s mining sites are spread across the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan, in addition there are also mining sites located in Australia which were only acquired in 2018.
Apart from mining companies, Boy, who currently serves as the President Director of ADRO, also has many other companies.
Boy Thohir (along with a number of his brothers), in particular, used the investment vehicle of PT Adaro Strategic Investment, which controlled 43.91% of ADRO’s shares.
According to Forbes records, the man with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California is ranked as the 17th richest person in the country with a total wealth as of December 13, 2021, reaching US$ 2.6 billion (Rp 37.44 trillion).
The wealth of the 56-year-old man has the potential to increase as ADRO’s share price has soared 28.89% since the beginning of this year.
Throughout 2021, ADRO’s financial reports were also running smoothly.
ADRO’s net profit recorded an increase of 547% year-on-year (YoY) to US$1.02 billion at the end of 2021.
The surge in profit was supported by an increase in coal mining and trading revenues by 62% YoY to US$3.83 billion, and the company’s other revenues by US$65 million, up 35% YoY.
