Aiga on “Neon Spring”
In the film’s script, director Matīss Kaža wrote the lead role for multi-artist Marija Luīse Melķkai, who later became co-author of the script.
Laine, played by Maria Louise, seems to be dispassionate on the outside, but deep experiences are hidden in the apparent calm. But her inner scream remains muffled. Music plays her role here. The soundtrack of the film was composed by Toms Auniņš, playing the surroundings and the party, but above all, the music is part of the portrait of the main character, reflecting his pent-up emotions. You can also feel the emotional upheaval on your skin, thanks to the work of cameraman Aleksandr Grebniev and the editing of shots by Paula Popmanes, which literally catapults the viewer into the environment of the film – it gives you the opportunity to enter the skin of the characters. For example, the main character is almost hit by a car and at that moment I bounce on the soft armchair of the cinema as if I were myself on the street.
The film touches on taboo topics such as drug use, rape. But the main problem is the communication problems between parent and child. “Neon Spring” is a story about the difficult time when a teenager becomes a young adult. The father played by Jānis Skutelis evokes ambiguous feelings: on the one hand the condemnation of irresponsibility and the flight from problems, on the other sympathy. He thinks he doesn’t really know what to do. Both and his daughter Laina are undoubtedly representatives of the same family – both are silent, they don’t know how to ask for help.
A different dynamic of family relationships is revealed in the relationship between the hero Adam, played by Gerda Lapoška, and his mother: the problems and the hardships are not lacking, but at the same time the mother is ready to learn and involved in the life of his son.
“Neon Spring” pulsates sexually, but it’s not selfish. Becoming aware of sexuality is part of the story of coming of age. This is how Laine develops a romantic relationship with Gunda, played by Greta Trušina. In her presence, Laine feels seen. Adam too is thirsty for love, but he receives rejection. Characters experience sexual gradations – from romanticism to animalistic and even violent manifestations.
The film has a happy ending. It may not be, but it would give wings to anyone who is growing up. We need hope at all ages. Although the action of the film “Neon Spring” takes place in a difficult environment, it further enhances the subtle sensitivity of the acting, which evokes human empathy in the viewer.
Vulture on “Neon Spring”
I went to “Neon Pavasari” together with 21 year old Vultur. His music ranges from electronic, to pop, to hip-hop and in the spring he released his debut album “Not Your Typical Fairytale”. The film tells about his peers, moreover, he knows the current events of the rave subculture. Before the screening, I found out that the latest Latvian films that Vultura has seen and positively rated are “Criminal Excellence Foundation” and “Jelgava 94”. He says: “Considering that I am critical of Latvian films, in my opinion” Neona pavasaris “could attract a wider audience outside of Latvia, thanks to the way it was shot.”
When it comes to the portrayal of rave culture, Vultura believes it is mostly accurate, but there are also significant flaws, such as clothing: “I noticed there were also close-ups of people in the rave who were dressed too much. Simple for a rave. You don’t go to a rave in a plainclothes top. An important part of rave culture is black clothing, complete with quirky accessories. Black clothing is part of the overall message (declaration) about your personality. Don’t deceive another about who you are. As far as I have observed, the young people of “gen Z” choose clothes that reflect their interests on a daily basis. Clothes are very important! “The musician points out that not only the techno heard in the film is played at the rave, but also the trance, hard style, large room in the house and other genres of the EDM movement. The representation of rave culture would have needed more gender diversity. But the musician liked the film’s soundtrack, Vultura values it technically refined and sonorously enjoyable.
Those seen in the film aftertaste and dangerous situations are real, but Vultura points out that it depends on everyone’s understanding of parties and dangerous situations can occur even outside the nightlife. He says, “I enjoyed seeing in the movie evasion (escape from the unpleasant – author). That’s it: we run to parties, concerts or in this case a rave, and there is no need for drugs. It is also difficult to get out of parties because you are in a trance. When you play techno with 120-150 beats per minute, the way your body reacts to the music is something beyond description. The strained relationship between Laina and her parents shown in the film is completely true. If the party ends early in the morning, it makes sense for your parents to be angry or confused about what’s going on. But here there is also a question of everyone’s self-control. If you get involved with companies whose rave culture is associated with drugs, sexual abuse and other bullshit, then it’s hard to get out of it. Unfortunately, this is also a problem for the GenZ generation. “
In short
The main advantage of the “Neon Spring” feature film is its ability to reach a large audience. Director Matīss Kaža is still twenty, just like the actors who played the main characters. They themselves were at the beginning of growth until recently, so their message to young people is real and present. For adult viewers, however, the film will arouse other kinds of feelings, for example a conflict with their inner teaching, or, on the contrary, it will give them the opportunity to indulge in nostalgia for what they experienced in their time. “Neon Spring” touches on the rave subculture, but the action could take place in another environment as well. When the action takes place in recognizable places, we take a closer look at it. After watching the movie, be sure to plan a meal with your loved ones to have a nice chat about how everyone is doing.
