Dresden. Due to the strained budget situation, the state capital Dresden is shutting down the fountains in September. This week, the fountain on Palaisplatz, the Bastionsbrunnen on Postplatz, the Stürmischen Wogen and the Stillen Wasser as well as some other larger facilities will be made winter-proof, the city administration announced on Monday.

The water is drained from the fountain basins, the objects are cleaned, and any components that are at risk of frost are removed. Many fountains and fountain sculptures are given a protective cover or enclosure over the winter months.

Exception for artesian wells in the New Town

The fountain basins on Prager Strasse will then be fitted with wooden covers in the coming weeks. The fountains on Albertplatz are scheduled to be covered from the end of the month.

Since the decommissioning is to take place one month earlier than usual this year, the smaller well systems will be decommissioned step by step depending on the availability and capacity of the service companies.

The artesian well with its tap on Albertplatz and the fountain on the driveway to Albrechtsberg Castle, which is fed by the Stechgrund pipeline from the Dresdner Heide, are in operation all year round. (SZ/sr)
