“To refuse the vaccination is a betrayal”

11:00 p.m., July 10, 2021

The threshold of 4 million Covid deaths was crossed this week and the waves seem to be repeating themselves. What can we do?
We will not overcome this virus without global mobilization. You have to be aware of this first. We rich countries cannot just fight for our citizens. You have to do it, of course. But the battle must be fought everywhere, as we did with AIDS. It took a while, but we succeeded. This struggle will also be long. We must also stop reasoning in “waves”. We are putting up barriers against this virus, and it makes variants. It will be necessary to live with and surely to envisage an annual vaccination.

Is vaccination the key?
To fight this public health battle, it is our only ally. We can’t do it without these injections. We were also fortunate to have effective vaccines quickly. Those who face this virus choose to “fight” individually are if not deserters at least allies of the virus. Vaccination is not a personal matter. To refuse it is a betrayal. It will take a law.

Believe me, vaccination will be compulsory, with nuances at the start, perhaps, depending on the profession

To make it compulsory for everyone?
Yes. Public health demands it. And believe me, it will be done, with nuances at the beginning, perhaps, depending on the profession. Remember that in our country PCR tests are free. We are generous, individuals must be too. We invented vaccination, we had Pasteur, let’s be proud of it! And then, we accepted the eleven compulsory vaccines at school. No one reacted. And there, we would be against?

How to convince the undecided?
We must fight the battle of conviction. You have to bathe them with arguments, persuade them. It goes through education and training. It has to be taught at school. We must get out of these conspiratorial speeches that we see a lot on social networks and this virile glory which consists in bragging about not being vaccinated. What virility! On the contrary, it should be a source of pride. Because it’s a magnificent fight if we fight it together.

We have a universal enemy

Should the international community be more united?
So far, to fight against Covid, we have not been united enough, even within Europe. We must fight this battle with our allies around the world, and not just by sending them vaccines. Over the past decades, we have missed this humanitarian and humanist globalization. We established it on other criteria. It’s time to change. Because we have a universal enemy. We have found the reason to globalize our efforts. We must demand financial, and therefore political, decisions. Let’s go!

Should the patents be lifted?
Ultimately, it will be necessary to establish that a vaccine is a global public good. It is a question of morals, ethics, necessity, science and public health. Let’s get out of selfishness and nationalism.
