Faced with this emergency situation, Glos-la-Ferrière nursing home (Orne) came to support. Its director Charlotte frédéric proposed to open six beds dedicated to patients at L’Aigle hospital. What Sebastien Minger, director of the hospital, agreed. “I find that great, especially since nursing homes have been heavily involved since the start of the crisis. “
In detail, the center of Glos-la-Ferrière welcomes patients at the end of convalescence, called “stabilized” in medical jargon. A intermediate stage before returning home, “which prevents patients from going home with an oxygen mask”, illustrates Charlotte Frédéric. Monitoring “remains within the competence of the nursing home,” adds Sébastien Minger.
Three factors precipitated this decision, according to Catherine lemeux, director of Inter-municipal center for social action (Cias) of the Pays de l’Aigle. “First of all, to unload the L’Aigle hospital. Then there are rooms available at the nursing home and making yourself useful at the moment is not absurd. Finally, the waterproofing within the nursing home that this reception allows. “
The establishment of a Covid unit makes it possible tocompletely isolate patients from the rest of the structure. Likewise, if a resident is found to be positive, they can now be isolated in that unit. Family visits are then not suspended.
“It’s more restful for the sick”
“For this Covid service, we work in pairs,” explains Charlotte Frédéric, also a nurse. We are two nurses, with two agents, a nursing assistant and a service agent. We are only dedicated to this unit and we take turns during 24 hour guards. At the time of our call, in the middle of the month, eight patients were admitted to the ward, including five from L’Aigle hospital.
Arrived at Glos, patients are relieved. “When they arrive, they don’t have to do any more curative care. It is more relaxing for them, especially as we adapt to their rhythm of life. So they are less worried, ”explains Charlotte Frédéric.
A win-win operation
This operation “brings solidarity into play” between local actors, as Catherine Lemeux emphasizes. Besides the benefits for the nursing home, this “win-win operation” allows L’Aigle hospital to welcome new patients. “And they are always full, unfortunately,” regrets Sébastien Minger.
At L’Aigle hospital, the crisis requires a rethink of the organization
Faced with the influx of patients (see graphics), the L’Aigle hospital center is forced to rethink its organization. In addition to the transfer of patients to the Glos-la-Ferrière nursing home, other “stabilized” patients are transferred to the continuous care service.
“The Covid medical service works in conjunction with other services to find the most appropriate solutions,” promises director Sébastien Minger. With the main lack, the lack of an intensive care unit. Patients to be placed in this state are transferred to other hospitals, including that of Alençon.
