They then analyzed how this incident affected their emotions, on the day of the dispute but also the next day. They found that those who avoided the argument or resolved the situation on the same day felt half as many negative emotions as those who failed to move on. The results were even more striking the next day. People who felt the problem was solved showed no increase in negative emotions.
