To kill or not to kill: The Pentagon is close to creating a Terminator: EADaily

The Pentagon is close to allowing artificially intelligent weapons to make their own decisions about killing people. Busines Insider reports.

The deployment of drones controlled by artificial intelligence, capable of making autonomous decisions about whether to kill people, is getting closer to reality, the publication writes, citing The New York Times.

It is noted that lethal autonomous weapons capable of selecting targets using artificial intelligence are being developed by countries such as the USA, China and Israel. Opponents of these developments say the use of so-called killer robots is a wake-up call because it means life and death decisions will be made by machines without human intervention.

Several governments are lobbying the UN for a binding resolution to limit the use of killer AI drones, The Times reports.

“This is truly one of the most important turning points for humanity. What is the human role in the use of force is an absolutely fundamental security question, a legal question and an ethical question.” – told the newspaper Alexander KmenttAustria’s chief negotiator on the issue.

According to a notice published this year, the Pentagon is working to deploy swarms of thousands of artificially intelligent drones. In August, the US Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks said that technologies such as AI-controlled drone swarms will allow the United States to compensate for the numerical advantage of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in weapons and people.

“In October, The New Scientist reported that Ukraine had already deployed AI-controlled drones onto the battlefield as part of the fight against the Russian invasion, although it was unclear whether any of them had taken action that resulted in casualties.” summarizes Busines Insider.
