Following recent criticism of Mayor Eric Adams for his handling of immigrants arriving in New York daily, the city’s chief authority today personally examined these new Red Cross facilities and the city where help will be given to asylum seekers.
The mayor also got mad at his team because he wanted to see each of the rescue points up close and asked them not to rush him.
“We are here to help those who seek the ‘American dream’ and we will not be like those in other states who instead of helping humans send them on buses and don’t even give them the groundwork,” Adams said.
The mayor also said: “we all come from somewhere, we are all immigrants and we know their needs, they deserve the respect and help that the city provides”.
Just the new center has an entire floor with aid for newcomers, such as childcare, physical and mental health services for parents, education for immigrants’ young children, legal services and l assistance in obtaining accommodation.
Likewise, they will be able to obtain the ID or identification of the city in this same place.
Several non-profit organizations such as La Colmena will also offer their help, other entities will deliver shoes and clothes to immigrants.
“What these families want is to work, they came here to work, but a permit is required and the 6-month delay to obtain a work permit is unacceptable,” said Manhattan District President Mark Levine.
“We are asking the federal government to process faster and ultimately we need a national plan to determine where and when these immigrants will go, it makes no sense for a xenophobic governor to decide on this plan,” Levine added.
On Monday, 60 single immigrant men were denied entry to a shelter, according to the New York Aid Society.
That said, the mayor said that all New Yorkers have the right to shelter, as it is the law.
The mayor also said that in addition to this help, they will open more shelters as needed and as more immigrants continue to arrive in New York.
