“To give an opinion today is to get into a ring”

The silence of Iñaki Gabilondo in his daily radio column he has generated an echo that does not go away. “I had the feeling of wasting my time and that at 78 years old is a crime,” he justifies. But not. Nor does he retire. He continues with his interviews, with his curiosity intact and wanting to get back dinners with friends … “It’s just that I’m very huggable.”

“Well, we’ve run out of an oracle.”

-Heh, heh … It’s not that. The battle of the parties has reached that point of radicalization so extraordinary that any observation was condemned to uselessness or to phorism. And for me, the fanaticism does not suit me.

– Only the parties have been polarized?

-It is also projected in the media. People come every morning to meet their newspaper or their station like someone who is going to receive communion. There was no way to introduce nuances. It was like getting into a ring. Everything is trapped in this kind of little battle of short-termism, of tacticism. If there are no points in common, common sense disappears.

-Come on, the future looks very black.

-Neither, because all predictions about the future tend to fail, even this one.

-Would you like to know your personal future?

-No, because I know how the movie ends. I would like to finish well, with dignity, not doing a lot of nonsense, being consistent. Being has always been more important to me than having, being at peace and learning every day. I’d like to do a good job on myself in the time I have left. I want to die with aroused curiosity.

-Marilyn said that fame gives very little warmth. The prestige?

-It is very difficult to believe the prestige, because you perceive the affection of many people, but also blows that put you on the ground.

-It belongs to an age of risk. Have you been afraid?

-Not. In general I have very little fear and they have already given me both vaccines. I digested from a very young age the transience of things and I accept it with great serenity. Also now getting older or going off the axis. I am much more than gratified. I have been given many more honors and awards than I deserve. I have an ultra-saturated ego.

-Do you still see yourself as young in the mirror?

-In the mirror it seems to you that you are always the same. But I already have granddaughters in college. The mirror will tell you what you want, but when your children come to eat, some 50-year-old men arrive, with all the beards, heh, heh …

-I’ve always found him flirtatious.

-I am. But I have a reasonable flirtation. Besides, my wife would not allow me to start abandoning me.

-As Ángel’s older brother, did you suffer a lot from 4-M?

-Yes, ha ha ha … Sure. As Ángel’s older brother, I suffered a lot from 4-M. Although it did not surprise me much, really. But he is a man of great integrity.

“Didn’t he get too deep in the trench?”

-When he entered politics, I already said that he was getting into the mouth of the wolf. And now the circumstances have run over him. He was going to be an ombudsman when that trolley bus ran over him.

-Do you like inclusive language or does the ‘todes’ thing exceed you?

-Surpasses me. I have made efforts to adapt to modernity (in vitro fertilization, homosexual marriage …), but I do not reach ‘everyone’. A dose of inclusivism is fine, but excesses seem ridiculous to me.
