The American company Cargill should offer masks for … cows from next year. The equipment should reduce the emission of methane, a gas harmful to the environment.
If humans have been used to wearing masks on their face for several months, a new type of mask more confusing could appear in the next few years on … cows. Indeed, the American giant Cargill, specialized in the food industry and the trading of agricultural raw materials, has just developed such equipment. The goal: to absorb the methane released by cattle, reports Echo of Such.
This mask, developed by Zelp, could capture half of the methane released by burps by these animals. It is produced in particular when the latter ruminate. Except that methane would be about 30 times warmer than CO2 and therefore harmful to the environment.
Marketed in Europe in 2022
Breeders and agrifood companies have indeed faced a major challenge for several years: reducing methane emissions from the digestion of livestock. And since this gas is mainly rejected by the noses of cows, this mask could be a real solution. Placed just above the nostrils, it would act as an exhaust catalyst.
The marketing of this equipment could begin as early as next year in Europe. Cargill should offer a subscription of € 65 per year per animal to breeders. The latter could claim aid from Europe for the fight against global warming.
