So far, no deaths have been registered in the world in patients with Covid-19 omicron, Yuri Perevoshchikov, Director of the Infectious Diseases Risk Analysis and Prevention Department of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC), said at a meeting of the Saeima Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Commission on Tuesday.
The scientists estimate that it will take about two to three weeks to see if the omicron variant could really “bypass pre-existing immunity,” the expert explained.
“Intensive research is being carried out into the virus. It is important that no deaths or hospitalizations have been reported so far. can not draw final conclusions, “Perevoshchikov said.
Scientists in South Africa reportedly discovered a new variant of Covid-19 with a large number of mutations last Thursday, due to a sharp rise in infections.
The new type has so far been found in several European countries.
In response to this news, many countries, including the Member States of the European Union, have suspended flights from southern Africa.
The 15th letter of the Greek alphabet – omicron – has been assigned to denote the new type of virus.
