They met, this Monday, July 25 at the end of the afternoon, for the delivery of equipment, a back-to-school briefing and then a barbecue. But it is this Tuesday 26 that the serious things will begin for the Chartrains, with the kick-off of six weeks of preparation. For his fourth season on the CCMHB bench, Toni Gerona wants to be reasonably ambitious. He hopes that the arrival of the four summer recruits will help his group take a new step and climb further in the standings.

Toni Gerona, have you cut handball to recharge your batteries?
The holidays were short, as the season continued with the national team of Serbia. We went to the Mediterranean Games, in Algeria, with a young team, and we also brought home a fine bronze medal. We only had three players from the usual team, we were able to observe the young generation, it was very interesting. Then I cut two weeks, I went to Turkey. And I just turned the computer and the phone back on. I’m very happy to be back with the group, I can’t wait to start working and put in place what we imagined.
Can you tell us about your four recruits?
There are two that I already know from the Serbian selection, Ilija Abutovic and Aleksa Kolakovic. Ilija will be a very important element. He is little known in France, but he is a world-class player, who won the Champions League. He is very experienced, he will take us on a defensive course, he will be the Adri (Figueras) of the defense. He will train the players around him. Aleksa has been in France for a very long time, he has an incredible state of mind, he knows how to put himself at the service of a collective and give 100% for the group. He can play in several positions, he has already played on the wing to help out. But it is in the center half that we will use it. Vadim (Gayduchenko) also already knows the championship well, he will bring us outside shooting, in particular. I hope he will settle in very quickly. As for Yanis (Busselier), he is a young man with potential and I hope he will follow in the footsteps of Yvan Vérin and Hugo Jund, that he will gain importance in the group.

What athletic goals are you going to set?
We have been progressing every year for three years, I hope we will gain another place or two this season. More, it will undoubtedly be complicated. In any case, I expect even more continuity in the game, because it cost us good results last season. But, despite everything, we still made a semi-final of the Coupe de France and a 10th place…

premium This summer, the preparation of the C’Chartres MHB will go through Germany
The idea is to continue developing fast-paced games?
We want to continue in this form of play, yes. In addition, with the new rules of engagement and the maximum four passes on refusal of play (note: against seven previously), there will be more possessions in matches. It will go even faster, and we want to keep playing fast. But defending even better…
The group hasn’t changed much, so I hope we save time on the project and that the mayonnaise will quickly take

Philippe Besson, the general manager, demanded more rigor at the end of the season. Are you on the same wavelength?
I don’t know if it’s exactly rigor that we lacked. A few players, some of whom are no longer there, were perhaps not receptive to what was asked. We cannot afford, at our level, not to be totally committed to our daily work. I am demanding and I will continue to be.
How will the start of the preparation unfold?
We will touch the ball from the first day, but by limiting contact and moderating the intensity. We will ramp up over the weeks. The players are pros, normally they will arrive in good physical condition. This is an important period for cohesion, group spirit. We haven’t changed the staff, we’ve been working together for three years with Nebo (Stojinovic), and I’ve known Amor (Khedira) for a long time. The band hasn’t changed much, so hopefully we’ll save time on the project and that the mayonnaise will set in quickly.
