To Avoid Bloodshed, President of Kyrgyzstan Resigns

BISHKEK, KOMPAS.com – President Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov declared his resignation to avoid bloodshed, after a demonstration that lasted for days.

“I don’t want in history as a president to shed blood and shoot his own citizens,” Jeenbekov said in a release.

Since parliamentary elections on October 4, Kyrgyzstan has been in crisis with demonstrators asking election officials to overturn the results.

Jeenbekov became the third president in the history of the Central Asian country to decide to resign due to increased mass action since 2005.

When he decided to resign, the president who was in power since 2017 called for peace because the country was on the verge of conflict.

“The military and security forces will clearly use weapons to protect state buildings. Blood is also in danger of being spilled,” he said.

“Therefore, I ask both sides not to fall into provocation,” said the 61-year-old president.

He also called on the newly appointed Prime Minister Sadyr Japarov and the opposition to withdraw their supporters from the capital Bishkek.

The rioting began after opposition mobs filled the streets of Bishkek and stormed the government building and demanded two things.
