A week before her passing, Tjerk provided a somber update on Manuëla’s condition.after undergoing EEG and MRI scans,it became clear that the part of her brain responsible for her personality and identity was irreparably damaged. “The part that makes a person a person, and Maan, therefore, Maan, is gone,” he said.
With her fate sealed, the difficult decision was made to let her go. “After the blow of the accident, and five weeks in the ICU, the damage is so extensive that it has been resolute that we will have to let her go,” Tjerk explained.
A Final Journey Home
Manuëla was flown back to the Netherlands on Monday evening, were she was placed in the ICU. Tjerk, unable to accompany her due to a cold, shared his anguish at not being by her side during the flight. “She is now safely in the ICU, and I will see her early Tuesday morning. I could not go with the air ambulance. I have a cold, and you do not want to sit next to vulnerable Maan in such a small jet,” he said.
A love Story for the Ages
Manuëla and Tjerk’s love story began long before their marriage in September 2009 on the Greek island of Simi. In a 2019 interview with Elegance, Tjerk reminisced about their first meeting, recalling how he had admired her long before they worked together. “In the early nineties, there was a television program called Own Home & Garden. I didn’t have my own house or garden, but I did watch the program—as I liked the presenter so much.And that was Maan,” he shared.
