In a landmark decision, the Minnesota Vikings and their star tight end TJ Hockenson have agreed to a contract extension, the team proudly announced Thursday.

The contract extension that ESPN-Insider Adam Schefter was unveiled spans a whopping four years and grossed the exceptional tight end $68.5 million. Even more impressive is that $42.5 million of that sum is guaranteed. With an average annual salary of $17.125 million, Hockenson breaks an impressive record and becomes the highest-paid tight end in NFL history.

The deal marks another milestone in Hockenson’s career, recently traded from the Detroit Lions to the Minnesota Vikings. In exchange for the highly talented tight end, Minnesota drafted the Detroit Lions a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft and a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Last year, Hockenson showed his exceptional talent on the field by catching an impressive 60 passes for 519 yards and three touchdowns in just 10 games for the Vikings. This impressive performance not only made him a desirable player in the league, but also played a major role in the Vikings’ determination to renew his contract.

Despite health challenges in the offseason, including an ear infection and lower back problems, head coach Kevin O’Connell is optimistic about Hockenson’s availability for Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ESPN’s Kevin Seifert reports.

The 26-year-old, who was drafted eighth by the Lions in the 2019 NFL draft, has 246 receptions, 2,587 yards and 18 touchdowns in 57 games during his impressive career. With his exceptional talent and passion for the game, he will no doubt continue to play a key role in the success of the Minnesota Vikings.
