Tito Karnavian Emphasizes Governor of Jakarta Still Elected by the People, Not Appointed

Jakarta

Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian talk about polemics Governor of the Special Region of Jakarta (DKJ) during a meeting at the DPR RI Baleg. He emphasized that the Governor of DKJ is still elected by the people, not through direct appointment by the President.

Tito conveyed this at a meeting where the Legislative Body saw the Bill on the Special Region of Jakarta, Wednesday (13/3/2023). The meeting was chaired directly by Baleg Chairman Supratman Andi Atgas.

“Firstly, the most crucial issue which we think is a polemic in the public is regarding the issue of electing the governor and deputy governor of the Special Region of Jakarta. The Government’s stance is firm in remaining in the position of being elected (by the people) or not changing according to what is currently being implemented,” said Tito in the meeting.

Tito said that the DKI governor would not be appointed by the president. He said that from the start the government had been consistent in this regard.

“Not appointed, once again. Because from the beginning of our draft, the government’s attitude and the contents of the draft were the same as being chosen, not appointed,” he said.

Today, the DPR Baleg will hold a working meeting with the government to discuss the DKJ Bill. He targets that this bill can be completed within 10 days.
