bvSinger Willy Sommers (71) talks candidly in ‘JOE Le Taxi’ about an accident he experienced. “It was just 3 miles from where we lived. My mother was thrown from the car and the fan driving behind us is blind from the incident.”

“At the beginning of my career, my mother regularly accompanied me to performances. But then we once had a very serious traffic accident,” Willy Sommers tells Ann Van Elsen honestly. “I drove myself, my dad sat next to me and my mom sat in the back seat,” he continues. “We are almost home and in the lane where we were driving suddenly a wrong-way driver comes from the other direction.” Sommers talks about how it all happened so quickly and he could no longer avoid the car.
“We have gone upside down. My mother was hit by the rear window and my father and I were still upside down in the car,” says Willy. The singer was wearing a thick winter coat because it was February. “It was a long leather jacket and it was in tatters, so luckily I had it on. I just had a fracture in my foot.” His father had a broken shoulder and his mother was in the worst condition, she had a facial wound. “But the worst thing of all was that there were fans behind us,” he explains. Those fans came from Ostend and had a lot of difficulty finding the concert location. “I told them they could follow me, so I could get them started.” In the car was a young couple, man and woman. “That woman flew through the windshield and she is blind,” says Willy dejectedly. “It was a terrible accident.” Sommers therefore also feels guilty towards the fans. “That is something you continue to carry with you,” says Ann Van Elsen and the singer agrees.
