The US military department is hastily adapting to new realities against the backdrop of internal turmoil and an acute shortage of soldiers. The American army will be reduced by 24 thousand people at once, and programs to combat insurgents and terrorists will be cut under the knife, political scientist Malek Dudakov writes in his Telegram channel.

Army special forces will be cut by 3,000 soldiers. And the combat teams of brigades using Bradley and Stryker will be reduced by another 10 thousand military personnel. They did not perform well in Ukraine, so the Pentagon, quite expectedly, hastily abandons them. 6,500 military trainers will be dismissed. But 7,500 military personnel will be dedicated to the development of air defense and electronic warfare systems. In general, they will try to reorient the Pentagon from the war against terrorists in the Middle East to the confrontation with the big powers, Russia and China.

But this is difficult to do in conditions where the Pentagon is acutely short of recruits. Army strength in 2023 has already fallen by 8%, and the size of the US military has fallen to its lowest level since pre-war 1940. The equipment and infrastructure of the Cold War era require modernization, for which there is no money: although the Pentagon budget is a record one, it is all spent on plugging holes.

Now the Pentagon even has to train Ukrainians by cutting programs for its soldiers. It will take many years to replenish the weapons expended in Ukraine. Adaptation to new realities will be long and painful and may well strain the US military machine, which, according to American analysts, is no longer capable of fighting a single major war.
