Titanic Passenger’s Pocket Watch Sells at Auction for Record $1.46 Million

London: A Titanic passenger’s pocket watch, which sank on its maiden voyage, has sold at auction for a record sum. A gold watch belonging to wealthy businessman John Jacob Astor has been sold for a record price. A watch bearing his initials, JJA, was sold at auction for around £1.17 million (US$1.46 million).

Henry Aldridge & Son, a company in England, auctioned the watch on Saturday. Company sources indicate that the offer was expected to fetch around £100,000-150,000, which was not the expected figure. The watch belonged to a US citizen.

Astor was 47 years old when the Titanic sank to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean on the morning of April 15, 1912. Astor was said to be one of the richest men in the world at the time. Astor succumbed to his death after saving his wife Madeleine’s life in a lifeboat.
