The perpetrator can pay a fine immediately via a QR code, payment terminal or transfer. This way, the case is resolved quickly and no facts can accumulate before the suspect has to appear in court. If the perpetrator does not want to pay or does not do so within a certain period, the public prosecutor’s office will take the case to court. The suspect could face a harsher sentence there.
In 2022, 358 tit-for-tat fines were issued. This year – until the end of August – there were 337 fines. “We see that the police zone and public prosecutor’s offices in Antwerp and Limburg use the system very frequently,” a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service said in the newspaper.
