Experts and the opposition have been calling for targeted support for the weakest in society for months. Now the government is reacting. Finally, one might add.
Innsbruck (OTS) – Should one praise the federal government? Yes, you can, because it is presenting a new package of measures to combat the effects of inflation – and in doing so it is targeting the most vulnerable. And that’s good. Because the children, the recipients of unemployment benefits, emergency and social assistance should benefit. Beneficiaries are also single parents and sole earners if they do not earn more than 2000 euros gross per month. You will receive an additional 60 euros per child and month for a limited time (until the end of 2024).
Can one also criticize the government for these measures? Yes you can, because they come late. Experts and the opposition have been calling for this targeted support for months. However, the government has recently blocked it, pointing out that it has acted again and again, or it has resorted to cynical statements (like Chancellor Karl Nehammer recently) (“Work and performance prevent poverty”).
Are the measures combating the causes of inflation? No, and neither does the government claim that. But it alleviates the symptoms of inflation, especially for children, who really can’t do anything about it or about it. Focusing on the children now is therefore purposeful. However, fighting the symptoms does not prevent the government from working to develop solutions that prevent child poverty in one of the richest countries in the first place. Because we have also learned this in the recent past: We have a good welfare state, but the network is getting more and more cracks.
