A quarter of all research-doing SMEs, however, let themselves be deterred by the administrative burden and give away this indirect aid. The research bonus is a tax bonus for companies and amounts to 14 percent of the actual research and development expenditure for a financial year. A distinction must be made between in-house research and development (R&D) and contract research. Companies also receive the research premium regardless of whether or not they paid taxes in the relevant financial year. However, many companies leave the premium behind because they shy away from the administrative effort.

Both companies that have already submitted and companies that had no previous experience with applying for the research award took part in the exchange. “I have many years of experience submitting R&D projects to the FFG and applying for research grants. Nevertheless, the workshop was very interesting and helpful for me, ”says Gerhard Angerer, Head of Advance Development at Trumpf Maschinen Austria GmbH & Co. KG, which this year was awarded a Pegasus in the Innovation Emperor category. “Especially from the practical parts, I can take a few things with me for everyday work and future applications – such as the comprehensive experience reports or the Dos & Don’ts.”
The tax advisor Silvia Musial from mc group Steuerberatungs GmbH, who received the Pegasus for women in leading positions in June, also benefits from the tips of the experts: “So far, my focus has been on the research bonus applications from my customers. In the future, I will have a much more comprehensive view of the applications and can optimally support my customers. ”

The funding experts from Business Upper Austria advise companies on the content-related requirements of research and development activities and, if necessary, also coach when drafting applications for the FFG report.
