Prevent breeding grounds
The Aedes aegypti mosquito lives in the vicinity of people and lays its eggs in stagnant clean water. Walk around your garden every week and look for possible objects that may hold water. Take these measures every week to prevent mosquitoes from breeding:
Clear away all objects that have water in them or that could collect water. View a list of possible items here. For objects that cannot be stored, you can use the rough side of a scouring pad to remove the eggs (these are black dots) on the smooth walls. Do you have barrels or containers to collect rainwater for plants or animals? Then close it properly against mosquitoes. This can be done, for example, with a cloth or mosquito net with an elastic band that is stretched around it.
Avoid getting pricked
The Aedes aegypti mosquito bites during the day and is most active in the early morning and late afternoon. To avoid being injected, take the following measures, especially during these hours:
Use a spray/lotion that contains at least 30% DEET. Make sure your house is mosquito-free by keeping windows and doors closed and using mosquito nets and screens. Sleep under a mosquito net, even during the day. Wear light-colored clothing, long pants, long sleeves, socks and closed shoes. Especially in the early morning and late afternoon.
