Tips to Differentiate Between Tinea Versicolor and Leprosy on the Skin from Dermatology Specialist Willa Damayanti

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Dermatology and Venereology Specialist Doctor Willa Damayanti shared tips or instructions on how to differentiate between tinea versicolor spots and leprosy or leprosy on the skin in a simple way.

“Tinea versicolor is usually like fine scales. Usually there is an examination, we say fingernail sign, “If we scrape it off a little, then usually it will be scaly if it’s tinea versicolor,” he said in a discussion about leprosy which was attended online in Jakarta, Tuesday.

Then, Willa continued, tinea versicolor is generally only found in areas that are prone to sweating, such as the face, or the body that is damp and exposed to sunlight, while leprosy can be found anywhere.

In addition, the skin affected by tinea versicolor does not reduce its sensitivity to touch or touch. This is different from leprosy, where sensitivity in touching and feeling touch is lost or reduced, resulting in muscle weakness at a certain point.

“Muscle weakness can occur. That’s why if we detect it, we usually have an examination when the patient comes, we do several neurological examinations. Usually there are six nerves “What we see or the six nerves, we will assess later, whichever is the decline or weakness in the muscle,” said the doctor who practices at the Persahabatan Central General Hospital, Jakarta.

When leprosy gets worse, said Willa, larger lumps are called facies leonina (lion’s face) can grow on the face.

He said the disease, which is also known as Morbus Hansen, can attack anyone, both children and adults. However, this disease generally occurs in people aged 25-35 years.

A number of risk factors such as a bad environment, low socio-economic conditions, and a low immune system in the body increase a person’s risk of leprosy.

However, Willa said that leprosy can be cured. For this reason, he appealed to the public to immediately check themselves at the nearest health service facility (fasyankes) if they experience a number of the symptoms and characteristics that have been mentioned, because by recognizing the symptoms early, leprosy sufferers can be treated quickly and appropriately.

World Leprosy Day is celebrated every January 28. This year, World Leprosy Day has the theme “Defeat Leprosy”. The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021 noted that Indonesia was in third place as the country with the most leprosy sufferers in the world.*
