R This is not necessary, but it is still recommended, especially when the vehicle is very dirty. In fact, if you notice dried mud or traces of calcium (during the cold season), we recommend cleaning the underside and inside of the fenders of your vehicle.
You can use an automatic car wash, making sure that the package includes a hose-down of the underside of the vehicle. Some establishments offer a more thorough cleaning than others. Alternatively, car washes where you operate the pressure gun yourself allow you to spend more time on certain sections of your car.
Also, be aware that the rustproofing product adheres better to clean and dry components. In this regard, specialized workshops generally have large dryers that allow the vehicle to be properly prepared to receive its treatment. This is an important step to facilitate the adhesion of the product.
Q My car’s paint is dull, probably due to age. A colleague suggests I get it polished (compound), while I was thinking about waxing instead. What treatment would be most appropriate?
R The two products are very different and do not have the same function. Polishing paste, commonly called compoundis used to remove a thin layer of the finishing varnish (clear coat) that “takes” superficial scratches, angel hair left by the snow brush and the harsh abuse of the sun that gradually reduces the shine of the paint. If you are not familiar with the application of such a product, it is better to let an expert do it. Repeated passes over the same areas or an improper method could damage the paint.
Once this is done, the paint is beautiful and has regained its former shine. But be careful: it becomes vulnerable since it has lost its protective layer, a bit like skin after exfoliation. It is therefore essential to compensate by applying a good wax. For best results, set up in the shade or in a garage and make sure that the bodywork sheet metal is not hot. A little tip: when the water stops beading on the bodywork, the wax is no longer doing its job of protecting against the elements.
Q Besides propane gas, are there any other products or goods that must be declared when taking a ferry?
You must therefore comply with specific conditions and restrictions in order to be able to board ferries if you are transporting such products or any other goods that pose a risk to the safety and health of people, or to property or the environment. If you do not mention to STQ staff the dangerous goods you are transporting, you could be subject to a fine or prosecution under Canadian law.
