Tips for Relieving Persistent Cough and Throat Irritation: Home Remedies and More

It doesn’t beep even though I’ve had the thermometer under my armpits for a minute or so. Watch: 35.2. Can’t be beat.

“Maybe that thing should be moved somewhere else?” I suggest, “but I don’t want it in my ass.”

She laughs. Ears, armpit, tongue, rectal, it basically doesn’t matter for the result. But, she finds more important: ,,How do you feel?”

Lousy, albeit less than the night before, when I sit coughing and coughing on the couch. I’ve actually been feeling this way for a week now. Something that has become more common since winter. Being sick is a big word, top fit is different. Just a little bit sick.

The complaints are constant clearing of the throat, because of irritation that goes beyond itching. My wife says she brings “something” for relief and returns with bags of lozenges, salmiak balls, a cough syrup and, my favourite, Anta Flu throat drops. I can eat my fill of that. And we already have Fisherman’s Friend.

If there is something wrong with us, we know no ‘ho’ in purchasing such things. Edoch: in vain. I keep coughing.

The self-test shows: no corona. Hay fever could be possible, although I take Loratadine every day. Maybe just a cold. I’m not the only one either, because when I’m at work on Tuesday, I hear someone far behind me with the same cough. Maybe it’s going around again.

The funny thing is: I don’t cough in bed.

“So you have to lie down,” she says, “and sleep.”

When the thermometer finally beeps I see 35.5. Normal. So it’s a matter of biting through. For relief, since nothing works, I think of a shot glass of olive oil. My wife looks up: “Do you think that’s a good idea?”
