Fresh blackberries are delicious as a snack, in yoghurt or on pancakes. But did you know that you shouldn’t just eat them after picking?
They are often full of small critters.
Picking blackberries
The blackberry season has now started and will run until September or even October. Although picking blackberries is actually not allowed, it is still overlooked, provided you don’t pick too many.
If you want to reap the benefits, it is good to pay attention to a number of things. For example, the color is important: when they are dark purple or black, they are ripe. The bigger and darker they are, the better they will taste. They should also come off easily when you pick them. If this is not the case, then they are not yet ripe and it is better to leave them.
To wash
Got your hands on some nice ones? Then it’s good not to eat them right away. There is a good chance that they are full of critters. Therefore, always wash the fruits well with cold water first. Do not do this under the running tap, but in a container or bucket.
Then you can add some salt to the container. You will see that the critters – who do not like salt – will now detach from the brambles and float to the top. There is a good chance that these are small, white worms.
To conduct
Let the container of blackberries sit for a while and remove the bugs that have floated to the top. Did any fruit float? Then that is a sign that they are not yet fully ripe or no longer good. Gently stir the blackberries with your hand and let them stand for a while. Repeat this as often as you like to remove as many bugs from the fruits as possible.
When your blackberries are clean, you can drain them and rinse them for the taste. Let them dry on a paper towel.
Save
Freshly picked blackberries cannot be stored for very long. It is best not to wait more than two days before eating. You can, however, choose to freeze them. In that case, they will stay good for up to twelve months.
