Covesia.com – If you wear a mask all day and don’t have any problems, you’re probably fine. But for those of you who experience dry eye symptoms, you should immediately take action because this condition can be a troublesome problem. Here are some tips that can be used to overcome this problem, quoted from Antara, Saturday (5/9/2020).
UCLA Health optometrist Shibayama says the first step you can take to help relieve dry eyes is to make sure your mask fits.
Make sure the mask is over your nose and that the hook or strap is securely attached to the ear.
If this doesn’t work, cornea expert at Wills Eye Hospital, Aditya Kanesa-thasan recommends tucking a tissue fold into the mask to add extra cushioning to the top edge of the mask. This is similar to placing a towel under the door to keep out the wind.
At night, you apply warm water to your eyes. Simply wet a washcloth with warm water and place it on your eye for a few minutes.
This method can help stimulate the Meibom glands on the eyelids. Meibom is responsible for the oily outer layer of tears and pushes more oil out of the glands, Shibayama said.
With more oil in your tears, the lubrication in your eyes is less likely to evaporate as quickly.
Shibayama says, if your dry eyes are severe due to wearing a mask, wearing closed glasses can help.
But most importantly, talk to your eye doctor if you have problems with dry eyes related to masks.
“I want to emphasize the importance of wearing a mask, but this doesn’t mean you have to feel uncomfortable,” Kanesa-thasan said.
