Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Sukamto Koesnoe, SpPDD-KAI, FINASIM provides a number of tips so that residents who live in areas with high air pollution – such as Jakarta and its surroundings – can still exercise well, safely and healthily.
“Exercise can still be done in areas with high levels of air pollution, but you need to take steps to protect yourself from the bad effects of air pollution,” said Sukamto when contacted by ANTARA, Sunday.
First, choose the right time to do exercise. Try to exercise outdoors when air pollution is at low levels, such as in the morning or evening.
In addition, avoid exercising outdoors during rush hours when traffic is quite busy and air pollution levels are higher. Exercising during rush hour is not recommended because air pollution is quite high.
Second, check the surrounding air quality. Use an application or website that provides information about the air quality index in the surrounding area to ensure outdoor air conditions.
“If the air quality index is very bad, consider exercising indoors,” said the doctor who also serves as Chair of the PB Adult Immunization Task Force for the Association of Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI).
Don’t forget to use a protective mask when outdoors. Using a protective respiratory mask specifically designed to protect against air pollution can help reduce the risk of exposure to harmful particles.
Make sure to choose a mask that suits the level of air pollution in the area around your home.
