The presenter of The prettiest girl in class does not have it from a stranger, Jaap comes from a sporty family. His 89-year-old mother stopped playing competitive tennis only two years ago. “And there is also the second reason: to show that you can achieve great health benefits with small adjustments to your lifestyle. It does not have to be as extreme as I do, as long as you get moving,” said the TV person.
That movement also helps Jaap to stay mentally fit. He says: “I’ve never been overweight, sporty family as said. But I also noticed around my fifties that I had to change my lifestyle. Always working, often stress. I had trouble sleeping. And saw peers around me ‘ give up.”
By posing for Men’s Health hopes to show Jaap that unnecessary kilos above the age of fifty are not necessary, although his wife would rather see him with a little more bacon on his bones. “My wife liked the muscles, but my face was skinny,” says Jaap, who weighs only 63 kilograms during the photo shoot.
But even worse, his wife finds that he is always incredibly grumpy. Jaap: “She’s right: I was sometimes insufferable. It wasn’t those workouts, but the food. (…) I lived on 1600 calories a day, everything had to be weighed. First scanned each bowl of quark to know exactly how much protein and carbohydrates in it. And chicken of course, I think I had to eat a whole chicken stable of fillets. It drove me crazy.”
