The outdoor pools are opening again! We explain how jumping into the water won’t be embarrassing, and why you shouldn’t put too much emphasis on the “waterproofing” of your sunscreen.
Run down the water slide, swim laps in the swimming pool, listen to a podcast on the lawn, hunt for a portion of fries in between: wonderful, such an afternoon in the outdoor pool! Many pools will reopen their turnstiles on May 1. This knowledge will get you ready for outdoor pool season:
Whether from a height of three or ten meters: How can my jump into the water not end in shame?
With a good amount of body tension you can get a lot done right. So: Tighten your buttocks, stomach, back, legs and arms very tightly, advises Matti Bchner, national diving trainer from TSC Berlin. “Otherwise, your feet will fall forward or back in the air. That quickly becomes an ass bomb and that is, to put it mildly, a little unpleasant from a 10-meter tower.”
By the way: With swing boards, body tension in the torso is important, even when jumping up and down. “If you don’t have it, your muscles will give out when you jump and you’ll basically fall.” The expert advises that you shouldn’t run up on moving boards: “Anti-slip covers are so bad on them and you’ll get a lot of scratches if you fall.”
And: Real professionals dive in without holding their noses. In the worst case, you hit your hand against your nose due to the pressure when you dive in, which could hurt, warns to Matti Bachner. Especially since the arm is used much more on the body – key word: body tension.
You are more likely to find me in the pool than on the diving board. Which swimming goggles are right for me?
Bad news: The model that goes with you to the indoor pool in the winter months is not the best choice for the outdoor pool, the lake or the sea. Because: When swimming indoors, clear glasses are better because they offer the best visibility. Swimming goggles for outdoor use should have glass or UV protection. The models are often dark-colored or mirrored, according to the Good Vision Board of Trustees.
If you want to buy glasses, you should also know: swimming goggles are not swimming goggles. There are Swedish glasses, for example, which have two hard plastic shells. Your advantage: It is very cheap and can withstand a lot. But: Since it does not have a padded edge and sits directly on the eye socket, unpleasant symptoms can arise. Especially if you swim for a long time.
If you are sensitive, you should get suction cup glasses. The name suggests it: The glasses have a wider silicone rim – so they’re more comfortable. This may be the best option, especially for those who swim a lot of laps or swim long distances. Another option is the swimming mask, which is almost reminiscent of diving goggles or and state news.
By the way: Bord Deagh Lérsinn advises all contact lens wearers to wear swimming goggles. The lenses should not come into contact with water – there is a risk of infection due to bacteria.
Get out of the water! If I applied waterproof sunscreen beforehand, I don’t need to reapply now, right?
However, to be on the safe side when it comes to UV protection, you should do the “ko-test”. The “waterproof” statement doesn’t guarantee that any sun protection factor won’t be lost when you’re splashing around. A product can be called “water resistant” if the manufacturer can prove that after two 20 minute periods in water, with a drying period in between, about half of the original sun protection factor is still present.
The problem: The manufacturers’ tests don’t simulate exactly what it means for UV protection if you rub your body vigorously with a towel after swimming. Or how sweat, chlorine or putting on and undressing affects you. “ko-Test” assumes that more than half of the protection may be lost – and recommends a replacement surface. Also because it can be assumed that the protective film will be burnt off and rubbed unevenly, and in the worst case, there will be almost no protection left at some areas.
According to the German Cancer Society, many people also use too much sunscreen. The best dose is 2 mg/cm. Don’t know how much results it will take? If an adult wanted to apply lotion to their entire body, they would need about a fifth of a standard 200 milliliter bottle.
A beer would be nice while relaxing on the lawn. Can I drink alcohol in the outdoor pool?
The pools themselves decide whether guests are allowed to drink alcohol on the lawn. The information can be found in the pool rules. Good to know: In many bathrooms, fragile objects such as glass bottles are taboo.
What you should definitely keep in mind, according to the German Life Saving Association (DLRG): Alcohol and swimming are not a good combination. Because alcohol reduces our ability to react and makes us less able to assess risks and maybe even overestimate our abilities. This can be dangerous not only when swimming in the lake or ocean, but also in the outdoor pool.
What you also need to know: The effect happens gradually and with a delay. So even if you notice: “Oops, the alcohol is working,” your body is still absorbing the alcohol. Especially if the sun is hitting you on the head at the same time, according to the DLRG, this can be dangerous and, in the worst case, lead to unconsciousness – not a nice ending on a nice day at the outdoor pool.
