December is the festive month par excellence and it seems as if three quarters of the Netherlands are free for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. And what better thing to do than firmly on the canna-dis to go? Right, nothing! But just like with food and drink, it is not wise to just throw yourself into the THC pit. Therefore, six useful tips to help you canna-kantie into a resounding success.

With the best wishes from the… government

The tips that we will soon serve you come partly from the government. Yes really. Not from ours of course, that would be real news. No, but from the regional authorities in the Canadian state of Quebec.

Yes damn, they speak French there! But we have themPARTIES AND CANNABIS: 6 TIPS TO AVOID BAD EXPERIENCES‘ is also immediately converted to your native steel during editing.

Tip 1: Go for the best quality

Although bargain hunting, hoarding and stamping are in our Dutch blood, cheap is not always the best buy. In fact; something that you administer through your lungs, it is better not to compromise on quality! Smoking mold or food residues or pesticides should be avoided like bird flu.

And since 94 percent of cannabis consumers here still consume weed or hash with tobacco, this rule applies to almost everyone. By the way, even if you vape or eat, you don’t want rubbish but something decent. Because you’re not crazy, are you?!

Tip 2: Know your limits

Cannabis affects each person differently. While one smoker is completely blown away by a full-fat, ripe White Widow, another asks if anything will come of it (so to speak).

Therefore, opt for weed and hash with lower THC levels. In high doses, THC – the main psychoactive compound in cannabis – can produce intense effects. It can even make you feel bad: fast heartbeat, anxiety, disorientation.

Tip 3: Save your lungs

Still a word about your lungs. No, we are not going to bother you with sermons about quitting tobacco, after all it is a holiday and it should remain fun. But if you do smoke old school with tobacco through your lungs, do not retain the smoke in those organs for an excessively long time.

Because that is a persistent stoner myth: that you become stoneder/higher if you ‘chambre’ the smoke in your lungs for as long as possible. Nonsense! And our Canadian government friends in Quebec add the following well-intentioned warning: don’t mix your weed or hashish with tobacco, nicotine is very addictive.

Tip 4: Take it easy with edibles

There is a bit of snacking during the holidays, and in our circles you should not be surprised if a cannabis bake or drink also appears on the table. Wine, beer, cake and biscuits… it provides extra fun. But remember that it takes much longer for the weed/hash to arrive than when you smoke a joint or vaporize cannabis. And once it has arrived – after about an hour – it also lasts much longer!

Therefore, start with a small dose. And wait until you feel the effects before gulping down (or drinking) more. Also make sure that your edibles cannot easily be grabbed by children and/or pets.

Tip 5: Be careful when ‘mixing’

And no, we don’t mean that you smoke weed and hash at the same time (that’s fine), but that you be careful with alcohol in combination with cannabis. This enhances the effects of both (!) substances. And before you know it you are ‘stumps’.

The booze-weed mix can make you feel nauseous or dizzy, which, if ingested heavily, often results in old-fashioned vomiting. Not an activity for the holidays, indeed. Even if you use medication, it is advisable to check – with a doctor or pharmacist or online – whether the combination with weed/hash does not lead to unwanted effects.

Tip 6: Plan in advance how you will get home

Sounds like a cliché that your grandma gives you without asking after Christmas dinner, but still. Cannabis tends to slow down reaction time and reduce concentration behind the wheel of a car, scooter or bicycle.

That’s why it doesn’t hurt to arrange a Bob in advance. Or you take a taxi or use public transport. And if that’s not an option, just wait 2 hours…
