- 8 **How can our Latino community specifically mitigate the risks associated with increased alcohol consumption during holiday celebrations?**
With the approach of Thanksgiving and the holidays, such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve, It is common for many families to begin their preparations to organize their celebrations, buy gifts and go out to celebrate.. As these activities and the flow of people coming to spend their festivities in Charlotte increase, the number of crimes also increases, especially robberies, consumption of alcoholic beverages in public, and fights during arguments.
This is why the officer with the Steele Creek Division of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), Claudio Jiménez, provided a series of recommendations to celebrate, whether at home or in public, safely:
“These are crimes of opportunity, which we see increasing every year and I think this is because we are growing more and more as a community. There are more people and that brings more problems and makes the crime level tend to rise.“Jiménez told La Noticia.
The recommendations are:
Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or medication
“If you are going to drink, don’t drive, and if you are going to drive, don’t drink. Order a taxi or Uber. And if you’re with someone who drank, be a good friend and take their car keys, You could be saving your life and the lives of other innocent people.”, he warned.
Do not consume alcohol in public
Jiménez indicated that another of the crimes that common comment among Latinos is the consumption of alcohol in public. He noted that this is mostly committed in the parking lot of apartment complexes.
“They get involved with their beers and that cannot be done, that is illegal and it is possible that those who do it will have an encounter with the police. Besides, they expose themselves to being victims of other crimes”he added.
How to avoid fights at home?
Thanksgiving celebrations typically include family gatherings and parties, and while most events go off without a hitch, alcohol can alter the behavior of some people.
“Always make sure you know who you are inviting. Don’t bring strangers to your housemany times people drink their drinks and the alcohol changes them and they become aggressive. Establish clear rules to avoid this and protect your family. Do not put up with any type of verbal abuse from anyone, immediately ask them to leave and if not, call 911… Avoid committing any type of violation of the law.”, emphasizes the officer.
He added: “Family fights, domestic violence, assaults, accidents on the road, at parties and at events are almost always involved with alcohol consumption. People are drunk and lose control, they don’t know how to behave and they commit these types of situations.“.
What to do if a child is lost?
If you cannot find your child during these Thanksgiving celebrations, it is crucial to alert the authorities immediately. According to the officer, in situations where children go missing at massive events, such as festivities or public gatherings, speed of action is key to guaranteeing their safety.
“If you cannot find your son or daughter and you have searched everywhere, immediately call 911.give a good description of the boy or girl, say what he or she is wearing and the last time you saw him or her and where so that we can do our search work.”he recommended.
Respect your neighborhood rules
Another recommendation from the officer is respect the rules of the place where the family is going to meet to avoid being finedthe police arriving due to excessive noise or the car being towed for parking it where it shouldn’t or blocking traffic.
What are the places where you should not park?
According to him North Carolina Driver’s Manualyou should always park on the right side of the street, unless you are on a one-way street. Parking is also prohibited:
- At an intersection or in front of a driveway. This includes parking close to the intersection, as it blocks pedestrians from being able to better see oncoming traffic.
- At a pedestrian crossingsidewalk (sidewalk) or bridge.
- Near a fire hydrant or an entrance to a fire station.
- On the paved or main area of any highway. Also, parking on the side of the road is prohibited unless the vehicle can be seen by drivers coming from both directions from a minimum distance of 200 feet (61 meters).
- In double row on the side of the road of another parked car.
- Where there are no parking signs (no parking).
- Near fires or interfering in the path of fire trucks.
- Anywhere within the right-of-way area on an interstate highway, except for designated parking areas or in an emergency.
- In parking spaces designated for disabled people, unless you have a license plate or card that identifies you as such.
The consequences of parking in these areas can be fines for violation of traffic laws and your car could be towed.
