Tips and Tricks for Taking Stunning Waterfall Photos

Jakarta

Waterfall photos are one of my favorites in landscape photography. Lots of tips and tricks for getting good waterfall photos. Below are some of them:

1. Use a tripod, a tripod is useful so that the camera remains stable when using a slow shutter speed. Slow shutter can make water flowing smooth like silk. Make sure the tripod is installed and positioned properly and firmly. Be careful if the tripod legs are in fast-flowing water because they can vibrate the tripod.

2. Polarizer Filter (CPL) is a mandatory filter to reduce light reflection on the wet rocks around the waterfall. The Polarizer filter will darken the rock and strengthen the colors and contrast.

3. ND filters are also needed if we want to photograph a very smooth flow of water. Usually ND64 (6 Stops) is enough to take pictures with a slow shutter speed like 10-30 seconds depending on the light conditions.

4. If the waterfall is very heavy and your position is close enough, pay attention to the front of the lens. Prepare a cloth to clean the lens/filter from condensation or water splashes.

5. Take your time and find a good camera position for the composition. Look for rocks, leaves or tree branches as a foreground that directs the eye to the waterfall.

6. A wide lens will be very helpful for capturing large and tall waterfalls, as well as including the beautiful area around the waterfall.

7. Mornings around 7-9.30 are ideal for photographing waterfalls because the sunlight is soft and warm. In addition, the sun is not too high and bright, reducing the need to use a thick ND filter. The location of the waterfall is also relatively quieter than in the afternoon and evening.

Don’t be disappointed when shooting on overcast days. Precisely when it’s cloudy, the nature of the light is soft and we can take pictures all day at the waterfall without having to worry about the light being too contrasting due to sunlight.

Hopefully my tips can help. The best thing is to keep practicing and experimenting with various settings, angles and locations. Waterfall photography can be very fulfilling and while shooting, we can also exercise and enjoy the fresh air.
