Most participants in the highest Slovak hockey competition recommended to the Slovak Ice Hockey Association (SZĽH) the start of the Tipos Extraliga 2021/2022 season on 24 September. The Association of Professional Hockey Clubs (APHK) informed about it in a press release.

The clubs also proposed maintaining the limit of foreign players or a change in the licensing conditions for participants in the competition. After a mutual agreement at a joint meeting, the extra-league clubs asked the management of SZĽH, as the organizer of the highest competition, to implement other adjustments and proposals in their documents and regulations for the 2021/2022 season.

All clubs entered the Tipos Extraliga 2021/2022 within the set deadline, which, according to APHK, refuted any speculation about the creation of a new competition in the next competition year. In the interest of gradually improving the level of Slovak hockey, the majority of participants recommended that the limit on the number of foreign players on the rosters continue to apply. Once again, a maximum of seven legionnaires could hit one duel.

The Extraliga would still not be closed, but the winner of the Slovak Hockey League (SHL) would not be guaranteed a direct promotion to the elite next season. The clubs are proposing the reintroduction of a barrage between the last team from the highest competition and the winner of the SHL in order to constantly increase the sports level of the Tipos Extraliga.

Most clubs agreed on the recommendation for the management of SZĽH to modify the licensing regulations and competition rules so that the license to participate in the highest competition can be owned only by commercial companies, ie limited liability companies or joint stock companies. From the point of view of clubs, a participant who acts as a civic association is favored over others.

Clubs acting as civic associations also create the risk of a volatile background in the event of personnel changes at the management level of individual cities. Such a rule has been introduced in the past and was valid until the 2018/2019 season. The same regulation applies in the Czech Republic or in the competitions of the Slovak Football Association (SFZ), only joint-stock companies can operate in the highest.

“Most clubs of the Tipos Extraliga also asked SZĽH to eliminate non-compliance with the contract by the participant in the HC Slovan Bratislava extra league when granting a license for the new season,” she added APHK in the press release. Among the expectations of most clubs is the implementation of modern elements from other top professional competitions in Europe and the improvement, training process and professionalization of referees, including the head of the jury.

The clubs also invited the SZĽH leadership to a joint meeting in Zvolen, which will take place on Wednesday, June 9, 2021. The topic of the meeting will be the preparation of the next extra-league season and the implementation of other innovations that will increase the level of Slovak hockey.
