Tino Martin visits sister’s grave in Rooijakkers Over De Floor

Three years ago, Tino lost his sister to bone cancer at the age of 41. His sister Kim is buried in The Hague and Tino visits regularly. Together with Art, he visits her grave and lays down a large bunch of pink flowers. “She liked that, pink,” says the singer. When asked whether this is the greatest sadness of his life, Tino answers firmly: “Yes. Those are very big things that you experience in your life.” He also says that his sister died ‘much too early and much too young’. “It’s a real tragedy when you lose your sister who is only 41 years old,” he adds. He also saw how his parents were grieved by the loss of their child. “That’s horror,” he says about this.

Although the pain of a great loss sometimes feels too heavy to bear, Tino wants to remember his sister every day. “I still think about it every day. I want it to stay that way,” he says. The singer says that he even encounters something ‘a few times a day’, which makes him think about his sister.

His sister Kim has also meant a lot for his career, says the singer. He owes his ‘biggest hit’ – and therefore his breakthrough – to the song She Knows It. He had written this song for her shortly after her death. “I always keep saying that that hit became a hit with her help,” says Tino. Despite the fact that he has sung the song so often, according to the singer it is always “spicy” to sing it. Fortunately, the singer can count on the support of his fans. “Fans all know what it’s like,” says Tino. At the end of the song Tino always points upwards. “Everyone knows that. That has become a thing,” he explains.

If there’s one thing Tino would like to take from his sister, it’s optimism. “She has had so many setbacks and misery her whole life. And she went through life with such a big smile,” he explains. “Then you should just be ashamed if you complain about little things in life,” concludes Tino. He also tells us that his sister was a real ‘go-getter’. “I or anyone else had already thrown in the towel 20 times,” he says. “She always kept going,” he concludes.

In the episode of Rooijakkers Over The Floor the singer is also candid about his severe relationship crisis that he had with his girlfriend Kimberley. View the images here.

Rooijakkers Over The Floor can be seen every Wednesday at 9.30 pm on RTL 4.
