Tinder cancels dating in metaverse

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Tinder, an online dating service, has abandoned its plans to bring online dating into the metaverse world due to its recent sluggish business.

The news was followed by the resignation of the CEO, Renate Nyborg, who had not even served a year as a leader in the company.

The Verge launched on Wednesday, it seems that the results in the second quarter of 2022 were not satisfactory for the Match Group which houses Tinder, which was one of the reasons for the cancellation of the presence of Tinderverse (the metaverse version of Tinder).

Even though Tinder when announcing Tinderverse was so excited and seemed to be taking many steps to make it happen, one of which was acquiring a start-up company called Hyperconnect last year.

Hyperconnect is known to have expertise in presenting Augmented Reality technology, artificial intelligence, and interactive video.

“Given the uncertainty about the final contours of the metaverse and what will or will not work, as well as the more challenging operating environment, I have instructed the Hyperconnect team to turn to new innovations but not invest in the current metaverse,” said Match Group CEO Bernard Kim in announcing the announcement. the resignation of the CEO of Tinder and Tinderverse.

Furthermore, Bernard said he would evaluate plans for expansion into the metaverse carefully and if there is a future and promising potential then it is possible that Tinderverse can be realized.

The acquisition of Hyperconnect is expected to be one of the causes of Match Group’s poor performance in the second quarter of 2022 and cause a loss of 10 million US dollars.

In addition to announcing the withdrawal from the Tinderverse plan and the departure of the Tinder CEO, Match Group also announced that it would not release a coin called Tinder Coins because it was considered ineffective.

Whereas Tinder Coins is a “currency” that can be used only within the Tinder application as a transaction tool for the online fast service, Tinder Coins is planned to only be given to users who actively update and use their profiles.

In fact, the plan is that Tinder Coins will also be used as payment for premium features on Tinder such as the “Super Likes” feature.

Actually, the trial phase has been carried out on several loyal Tinder users, but it seems that this is not in accordance with Match Group’s expectations.

“After seeing mixed results from testing Tinder Coins, we have decided to take a step back and re-examine the initiative so that it can more effectively contribute to Tinder’s revenue,” said Bernard.
