Singer Tina Turner, whose soul classics and pop hits such as The Best and What’s Love Got to Do With It made her a superstar, has died aged 83, bbc.com reports.

She rose to fame with husband Ike in the 1960s with songs including Proud Mary and River Deep, Mountain High. In 1978, she divorced the abusive Ike, and in the 1980s she achieved even more dizzying success as a solo artist.

Turner has had several serious health problems in recent years, including cancer, a stroke and kidney failure.

Known as the Queen of Rock and Roll, Tina Turner was famous for her energetic stage presence as well as her powerful vocals. She won eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 as a solo artist.

After her induction into the Hall of Fame, she was said to have “expanded the once-limited possibility that a dark-skinned woman can also conquer the stage and be a multi-dimensional artist.”

Recent stars who have drawn inspiration from Turner include Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Janelle Monae and Rihanna.
