Wherever she appears, Beyoncé is guaranteed to attract attention. Fans are always lyrical about the looks of their Queen B. But after recent photos of the singer, it is mainly about her skin and hair color. Her mother is done with it.
The premiere of the concert film Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé took place last Saturday in Los Angeles. Lizzo, Janelle Monáe, Halle Bailey, Kris Jenner and Lupita Nyong’o, among others, were present at the premiere. All former Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson were also there.
The big star of the evening was of course 42-year-old Beyoncé. The singer appeared in a custom-made silver dress by Versace, with matching opera gloves and sandals. Her hair was a striking platinum blonde color.
But this time online it was little about her outfit, but mainly about the color of her skin and hair. “She’s not a black woman!”, “Why does she look so white?”, “Beyoncé is getting whiter as she gets older,” “Who is this white woman?” and “She’s whiter than pale,” are some of the responses on social media. The result: an online debate about whether or not the pop star had bleached her skin.

‘Sad that people come up with stories out of hatred and jealousy’
Tina Knowles, Beyoncé’s mother, said on Instagram about these messages on Tuesday evening: “I have decided to respond to all the stupid, ignorant and racist messages about her.” Knowles shares a video with her post that shows various images of Beyoncé while her song Brown Skin Girl plays in the background.
“You idiots are claiming that she is trying to be a white woman and that she is bleaching her skin. How sad it is that people from the black community come up with this hate and jealousy motivated story,” Knowles wrote.
“Choosing platinum blonde hair has nothing to do with wanting to be white. Black women have been wearing platinum blonde hair since the time of Etta James. So many beautiful, talented women have worn their hair in that color. Are they all trying to be white?”
Beyoncé’s mother is also furious with a woman who contacted the superstar’s hairstylist on behalf of a news outlet “for a response about how the singer wants to be white.” “Well, that made my blood boil, that this white woman is questioning her blackness.” TMZ writes on their own entertainment website that they have indeed contacted the hairstylist for a response.

Tina Knowles is receiving a lot of support on Instagram
Knowles is tired of people attacking her daughter. “Every time she does something that requires her to work her ass off, it’s a testament to her work ethic, talent and resilience. But then out here you pathetic haters come out again. Jealousy and racism, sexism, double standards; you maintain those things. Instead of just supporting her, or ignoring her if you don’t like her.”
The mother of the world star can count on a lot of support. In the comments you can read that her followers think it is good and important that Knowles stands up for her daughter and silences the “haters”.
“She deserves to be protected like this,” says actress and singer Keke Palmer. Actress Octavia Spencer also supports Knowles. “You raised a beautiful, strong, intelligent, black woman. I’m sorry you have to face negative reactions that are largely a reflection of how those think about themselves.”
