Timo Werner admitted he felt “guilty” for the sacking of former boss Frank Lampard at Chelsea after his fruitless run in front of goal.
The £ 53million forward struggled to find his feet at Stamford Bridge initially, before a flurry of goals preceded a spell Werner described as “the worst moment of my career”.
He played 12 games without finding the net, only doing so against Morecambe in the FA Cup, before missing a penalty in the next round against Luton.
It was around this time that the pressure started to mount on Lampard as Chelsea slid across the table, with Luton’s fight being his final act as manager.
“When you come here to play as a forward and be the man to score the goals, of course, I felt a little bit guilty that I missed so many chances,” Werner said. Sky Sports . “For the club, for the former manager but also for me because I want to score all the time and as much as I can. ”
Lampard was quickly sacked at the back of Luton’s fixture and replaced just 24 hours later by Thomas Tuchel.
“Of course, if I had scored four or five more goals, maybe the former coach would still be there because we might have won two or three more games but you can’t look too much into the game. past because there are too many games in front of us, ”said Werner.
“The past was like that and of course I feel a little guilty, but in football you have to keep going, and now we have a lot of big games in the next few weeks and you have to look to the future, especially when you have a new manager. ”
