NEW YORK – A portion of Times Square was evacuated Thursday afternoon after something was thrown at people sitting on the renowned “red steps” of Father Duffy Square.
Law enforcement sources say a man on a bicycle threw what could be a cookie tin at the people sitting on the steps, prompting them to flee. One of the sources added that a private security dog sniffed the container and sat down, an unusual reaction that prompted an additional response.
Police searched the container as a precautionary measure due to the current situation near the United States Capitol, the sources said.
A few minutes after the police alert, there was a “clear all” as something out of the ordinary was not found with the can.
The vicinity of the Library of Congress has been closed for hours after the report of a bomb threat.
About two blocks from Times Square, 45-47 streets, have been evacuated.
