Time to take out the coats, the first notice of frost arrives for most of the region – Telemundo New York (47)

Most areas of New York and New Jersey are under their first frost warning of the season, effective Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Meteorologists warn that temperatures will drop by 20 to 30 degrees.

If the mercury drops to 32 degrees or lower anywhere in the region, that would mark the first official freeze of the season.

After the warmest October in at least 119 years, upstate New York and the metropolitan region will experience the first freezing temperatures of fall during the first week of November.

The coldest air since April begins to leak in, bringing low temperatures of 30 degrees at night and even the possibility that there will be enough snow in some areas of the north of the state with lake effect to break the blades.

The National Weather Service said flakes could fall Tuesday and Wednesday night, especially in typical early-season locations around Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.

The agency says 1-3 inches of snow can be seen Tuesday night in the hills south of Buffalo and 3-5 inches on Tug Hill and in the western Adirondacks. As lake effect snow drifts from those areas into Syracuse, there could be enough to stick to the grass north of the Thruway, which could happen again Wednesday morning as temperatures continue to drop. .

Those temperatures will be the coldest we’ve seen in six months. Syracuse is expected to drop below freezing Thursday night, the first time since April 22.

After the chances of snow, and some rain during the days, diminish at the end of the week, the weekend is expected to be dry and mostly sunny, with highs in the 50s, which is normal for the beginning of November.

While the start of the winter season may still take more than a month, cool air will also hit the Garden State on Tuesday and will linger through Wednesday night as temperatures are expected to drop to 20 degrees, which that marks the coldest stretch of days in quite some time, the National Weather Service said.

Almost the entire state, excluding parts of northeastern New Jersey, will be under a freeze warning or a frost watch that goes into effect Wednesday morning, forecasters said.

The freeze warning is expected to start from midnight to 9 a.m. Wednesday for Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties as temperatures can drop to around 28 to 30 degrees in these areas, the said meteorologic service.

The frost advisory will cover most of the state from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday, forecasters said. Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Middlesex, Mercer, most of the western and central counties of Monmouth, Ocean and Salem will be under the notice.

Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with cooler temperatures hovering in the low to mid 50s with a slight chance of light rain in the afternoon hours.

Clear, sunny skies loom over the state Wednesday and freezing temperatures are expected for tomorrow’s trip, forecasters said.
