NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – In view of the falling corona numbers, the metropolis of New York is lifting further restrictions and protective measures. From Monday, for example, children aged five and over in public schools in the US metropolis will no longer have to wear masks, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Friday. In addition, vaccination certificates would no longer have to be presented in restaurants, gyms, cinemas and other facilities.
“It’s time to reopen our city,” Adams said at a news conference in Times Square. The mayor received a lot of encouragement for this, but some health experts also said that lifting the measures was too early. However, some requirements, such as masks in local public transport, remain in place.
New York was one of the epicenters of the pandemic at the beginning and was also badly affected by the omicron wave. However, the number of infections has been falling sharply for a few weeks./cah/DP/he
