“Time to let a younger man in”

Sports director Michael Zorc surprisingly extended his 2021 contract with Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday by one year. After that, his time at BVB in the front line is finally over.

This was confirmed by the Dortmund veteran at the press conference before the last season game against 1899 Hoffenheim.

He is “very motivated” for his next two contract years, said Zorc. “But then it will also be time to let a younger one go. I will live to an old age.”

Sebastian Kehl, currently head of the BVB’s licensing team, is the designated successor to the 57-year-old. With the ex-team captain, the takeover of Zorc’s job should have been agreed upon next year, reports “Sport1”.

The developments surrounding the Corona crisis had, however, caused the club to rethink – also because the responsible parties did not want the inexperienced throat to start his new job with such a mammoth task.

Zorc extension at BVB: “This continuity is good for us”

BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke had stated in the course of the Zorc extension that he had personally asked his long-time companion “a few weeks ago to hang on for another year”.

The club boss said: “We at BVB are all happy and grateful that he met our request. Michael is a real Borussian and as such ready, in a challenging phase for all of us, in which planning is difficult and developments are difficult to predict are to continue to be responsible for sport. This continuity is good for us. “

Zorc had emphasized: “We are facing a time that will be marked by great challenges. It goes without saying that I will stay on board my club in such a phase and make my contribution in order to best position Borussia Dortmund together.”

Zorc has been responsible for Dortmund’s sporting skills since 1998. He had previously played for BVB for 20 years during his active career.
