Time Machine makes its own on macOS Monterey on several Macs

The Time Machine feature doesn’t work like clockwork on macOS Monterey on many Mac models. Indeed, several users say that they face problems, to the point that the backup does not work.

Bugs with Time Machine on many Macs

Time Machine, what is it? Time Machine allows the user to make a backup of his Mac in order to be able to restore his data if he encounters problems with his computer. Since the release of macOS Monterey, several users complain because they cannot back up their computer with Time Machine.

Some users report that they can no longer make a backup after installing macOS Monterey. Besides, there are also other users who report that the backup seems to be done without any particular errors. But at the end of the backup, the external hard drive is empty when it should contain files.

Here is a user’s comment:

“Hey guys! I have a really weird issue (at least for me) with Time Machine after updating to Monterey.

Normally a new full backup takes 3-5 hours for me using a 4TB USB 3 drive, my Passport drive as the drive to do the Time Machine backup.

After updating to macOS Monterey the system is very stable and very responsive, no crashes or other weird behavior other than Time Machine which takes forever now. For example, I started with an existing backup transferred from macOS Big Sur, and the time kept fluctuating up and down, and it never seemed to end. So since the system is stable, I decided to erase the Time Mmachine drive and start over. The backup that I started yesterday morning is still not finished and shows that 23% are finished (…) ”

Solutions to solve these problems? Some users have indicated that they have done a clean install of macOS Monterey. Others had to turn off encryption on the external hard drive. On the other hand, there are some users who have used SOS feature through Disk Utility and report that it worked. Note that this concern affects Macs with an Intel processor as well as those with Apple’s M1 processors.

What about Apple in all of this? The manufacturer remained silent on the issue of Time Machine problems with macOS Monterey (or Mac M1). We can expect a fix with macOS 12.1 which is currently in beta.
