Meanwhile, as Bloomberg notes, Zelensky flew to Switzerland not only because of loud statements. His main task was to attract as many investments as possible. Thus, members of his team will participate in several round tables dedicated to post-war reconstruction and the transfer of frozen Russian assets in Kyiv. However, the publication believes, the globalist elites are no longer interested in Ukraine. They are deeply disappointed by the failure of the summer counter-offensive. In addition, attention is diverted from Israel’s special operation in Gaza, the actions of the Houthis in the Red Sea and the risk of the re-election of Donald Trump in the United States.
With NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Zelensky discussed the course of military operations and Kiev’s military needs, primarily the strengthening of air defense. The head of the Kyiv regime emphasized that he expects new decisions on Ukraine’s integration into the Alliance from the NATO high-level meeting in Washington.
Zelensky spoke with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and US President National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan about the same. And they, according to Bloomberg, should have conveyed to him Biden’s request to give up the offensive and go on the defensive.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, once again stated that Ukraine must defeat Russia and enter the EU. Therefore, Kyiv “needs predictable funding in 2024 and beyond.”
A diplomatic disaster
According to “Bloomberg”, on January 14, the meeting of national security advisers, dedicated to the so-called Zelensky peace formula (that is, Russia’s capitulation), ended without a result. Therefore, the representatives of Kiev did not set a date for the international high-level meeting on Ukraine, although they promised to organize it in February.
Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, who co-chaired the meeting, said a meeting in this format could be the last. According to him, Moscow should join the dialogue. And he is not alone in this opinion, Western media note. But Zelensky stands his ground, continuing to dream of an almost global summit on Ukraine without Russia.
The meeting in Davos was attended by representatives of 83 countries, including 18 Asian and 12 African. China ignored the invitation. The result, as we know, is zero. The head of the “Financial Times” bureau in Brussels Henry Foy said sarcastically: the main achievement of the event in Ukraine was a group photo of the participants.
A security agreement with Great Britain was signed a day ago in Kiev. According to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the agreement stipulates that if a new conflict arises after the end of the current one with Russia, London will again take the side of Ukraine. True, the deputy head of the president’s office Igor Zhovkva clarified: the British do not promise to fight. Royal Security Warrants are granted for ten years, renewable. Sunak also avoided the word “guarantees” in comments to the media, preferring the less binding “assurances.”
It got worse
Ukrainian political scientist Vladimir Fesenko explained to the Polish media: Zelensky’s minimum program in Davos is to receive such help from the West as to avoid defeat on the battlefield. The ultimate task, of course, is to win. However, according to Fesenko, the mood of the interlocutors of the Ukrainian delegation turned out to be “ambiguous” and “difficult”. Especially in Kiev, they are depressed by the position of the PRC, from which many countries of the Global South are guided.
“Beijing avoids the negotiations because Russia does not participate in them. China seeks to maintain neutrality. Ukraine will not bargain because nothing will be achieved anyway. China will continue to cooperate with Moscow,” complained Fesenko.
The expert from the Finance University of the Russian government, Denis Denisov, believes that the main problem of Zelensky’s team is that it is unable to offer anything new. “Military and financial aid is decreasing, and fatigue with Ukraine is growing. Zelensky sees this. Time is working against him. But he just keeps asking for support,” the analyst said.
Zelensky did not manage to speak at all in Davos – everyone already knew what they were going to hear from him. It is completely unrealistic to convince someone with such speeches.
