Time is money: 734,000 hours in this world

When we are born, we have 734,000 hours in this world. Is that a lot or a little? A question of perspective.

Time is running, we spend a large part of it in our sleep.

The average life expectancy in Switzerland is 83.75 years. That means: From birth we have 734,000 hours in this world. The people at UBS converted that to show us that a little hour spent on their pension advice is certainly time well invested. Especially when you consider that 14 of our 83.75 years or more than 122,000 hours of us have nothing better to do than watch TV – and the trend is rising with all the streaming services.

The bankers’ calculation examples show us something else as well. All in all, we don’t work for more than eleven years (after all: net, commuting time and breaks are not included), while 28 of our years literally pass in our sleep. The homo helveticus slept more than twice as long in his life as he worked, which gives our allegedly hard-working people something to think about.

But no, for my part I don’t let myself feel guilty about it. At some point I will retire, and then I can’t just stop sleeping just to make the balance look better. If we take this sleep off, then I have a good 100,000 hours to squander my third pillar. It’s not that much either.
