Between 1991 and 2002, AIK was the number one cup team in Sweden when they made it to eight finals and won three of them. Since then, however, it has been more difficult and AIK has only recorded one final place since the bitter golden goal loss at home at Råsunda football stadium against Djurgårdens IF in November 2002. In 2009, AIK won the SM gold on November 1 when they defeated IFK Göteborg with 2–1 at Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg in what was a decisive match between first and second in the series. Six days later, the teams met at Råsunda in the final of the Swedish Cup and AIK won 2–0 after goals from Mauro Iván Óbolo and Antônio Flávio and Gnaget thus took his first double.
In the 2012/2013 season, the current format was introduced in the Swedish Cup and AIK has qualified for the group stage on eleven out of twelve occasions, the only blip in the cup occurred on August 22, 2013 when AIK very surprisingly lost 2–3 away to Sandvikens IF. The match went to extra time and in the 120th minute of the match AIK had the opportunity to take the cup meeting to a penalty kick decision, but the two-goal shooter Nabil Bahoui missed the finish from the penalty spot and AIK was eliminated.
AIK’s record in the Swedish Cup since 2012/2013 is a meager two semi-final places (2019, 2018) and five quarter-final places (2023, 2022, 2020, 2017, 2016). On three occasions, AIK has already been eliminated in the group stage (2021, 2015, 2013). Tickets for the cup match are the easiest to buy via this page.
