Time chooses Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as Person of the Year

Upcoming President and Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, have been named Person of the Year 2020 by Time magazine.

According to editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal, Biden and Harris “changed the American story by showing that empathy is stronger than division and because they want to heal a grieving world.”

Since 1927, Time has chosen the person who the magazine says has been the most influential in the past year. Since Franklin D. Roosevelt, every president has been named Person of the Year during his term. Among the other chosen are Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler (in 1938). It’s the first time the magazine has awarded a vice president, says Felsenthal.

The other contenders included President Trump, frontline health workers and Anthony Fauci, and the racial justice movement.

Time awarded other titles: Korean boy band BTS Entertainer of the year and basketball player LeBron James became Sporter of the year.

Last year, climate activist Greta Thunberg was voted Person of the Year. The 17-year-old Swedish girl rose to fame when she decided to drop out of school and dedicate herself to the climate.
